US and China Agree to Temporary Trade De-escalation Following Trump-Xi Meeting

Understand the specific concessions made by Presidents Trump and Xi, revealing why this agreement functions as a temporary truce rather than a final resolution to the ongoing trade conflict.

Short Summary

  • China agreed to massive purchases of US farm products and temporarily lifts restrictions on critical rare earth minerals.
  • The US reduced tariffs on some Chinese goods and paused further expansion of export controls against Chinese firms.
  • Experts characterize the immediate outcome as a "truce," noting that President Xi Jinping now takes center stage at the APEC summit in Trump's absence.

This segment details the outcomes announced after President Trump met with President Xi Jinping in South Korea. We review US and Chinese stated agreements, expert analysis on the balance of wins, and the shifting geopolitical focus as Xi remains for the APEC summit.

Description

US President Donald Trump said a full US-China trade deal will be signed “pretty soon” following a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea. A series of announcements on closer trade ties have been made, including the US cutting the “fentanyl tariff” on Chinese goods entering the US from 20% to 10%. In return, China will start “the purchase of massive amounts of soybeans, sorghum, and other farm products”, Trump says. China says it will make it easier for the US to buy rare earths and that, in return, the US will suspend an expansion of export controls on foreign firms listed on the Entity List, which had hit Chinese companies. So basically Trump dropped the tariffs so that China would buy soy beans from the US this year. (but 20% less than last year) China will release minimal amounts of rare earths…and things will go back to how they were, but with the US getting less out of it.

Listening to the last "expert" one would assume that we can use the rare earth minerals directly from the ground, basically grab a shovel, dig the stuff out of the ground and make magnets in one go. Maybe the expert should talk to real experts, like the one who make the magnets.
