Description

Fire crews are getting a unique hand in trying to slow the blazes tearing through Los Angeles - the California prison system. Nearly 400 inmates are among the 14,000 emergency responders working on the wildfires that have destroyed at least 2,000 buildings and killed at least seven in the Los Angeles area. At present, inmates are believed to make up approximately 30 percent of the state’s firefighting force, according to the Los Angeles Times. The inmates are paid, though it’s a pitifully small amount — approximately $27 for an entire 24-hour shift. They’re also provided food in the form of sandwiches and fruit. Guest hosts Russell Dobular and Keaton Weiss of the Due Dissidence podcast talk discuss California’s lengthy history of using prison labor to fight wildfires and Kamala Harris’ involvement as Attorney General in keeping inmates in prison to maintain firefighters’ ranks. Wait. Have they been vaxed? Because, if not, they should be disqualified just like the hundreds of LAFD firefighters who lost their jobs and got forced into early retirement in 2021.

I was an inmate firefighter and helped fight in 7 of the largest fires in CA. I consider it my service. I was also in a roll over accident on a crew truck after a 17acre fire. It was hard work and extremely dangerous but I was proud to work side by side with Cal Fire!

Prisoners make furniture for Ikea. They make clothing for Target and Walmart. They work at McDonald's and Burger King. There is no end to the exploitation of cheap labor in the US

Unfortunately, firefighting is one of the few professions that can overlook a felony conviction. I personally know a few individuals that learned firefighting in prison and received government jobs as a result. I know one individual that has felony, but now is a battalion commander in the state wildland fire. He personally trains the inmate crews and is an example of rebuilding your life after prison. There are many firefighters that have felonies and now work for local and city fire departments with felonies.

I worked alongside inmates when I was a CalFire firefighter. They were treated extremely well. Don’t fall for the propaganda that this is slavery.
