Fasting Science: Preserving Facial Appearance While Burning Dangerous Internal Fat

Learn why intermittent fasting protects your facial structure from aging and hollowness—the dreaded "Ozempic Face"—while effectively eliminating harmful visceral fat.

Short Summary

  • Fasting mobilizes protective hormonal responses (like Growth Hormone) that preserve facial subcutaneous fat and skin elasticity.
  • Time-restricted eating combined with low-carb approaches yield superior results in targeting dangerous visceral fat over simple calorie cuts.
  • Understand the critical distinction between fat types (visceral vs. subcutaneous, brown vs. white) that determines successful, healthy weight loss outcomes.

This discussion with Dr. Jason Fung contrasts rapid, drug-induced weight loss with the natural mechanics of fasting. Readers gain actionable insight into which fat metabolizes first and how hormones activate beneficial processes like autophagy and fat-beiging to optimize body composition and appearance.

IF and eating good food IS my Ozempic. I lost 60 pounds and kept it off. I don’t look like a survivor of a catastrophe. 😮 Glad to watch your videos, Dr Fung. 🎊 🎊 🎉

I thought I would give IF a chance before seeking out ozempic and I am so glad I did! I started at 184 in January and now I’m down to 145 using IF and keto. No facial changes other than a minimal loss of facial fat.

Some of the “ozempic face” might not be ozempic, but instead buccal fat removal.

If your after photo is 10 years older than your before photo, then, then yeah, your after photo is going to make you look 10 years older.
