MONSTER The Ed Gein Story Real-Life VS Netflix | Review And ENDING EXPLAINED
Reviewing the Real-Life vs. Netflix Portrayal of Ed Gein in Monster
Analyze the historical truths and creative licenses behind the controversial Netflix limited series, Monster: The Ed Gein Story. Gain clarity on how Gein’s life influenced cinematic horror and where the show takes substantial dramatic liberties.
Short Summary
- Uncover the childhood traumas, isolation, and religious indoctrination that shaped Ed Gein’s pathology, centered heavily around his relationship with his mother.
- Identify critical historical events, including the suspicious death of his brother Henry and the discovery of the hardware store owner Bernice Warden’s remains.
- Evaluate Ryan Murphy's stylistic choices, specifically the heavy reliance on Psycho references and the show’s controversial tendency to sympathize with the perpetrator.
- Note that many of Gein's admissions were thrown out of court due to police misconduct during his initial confession.
This video contrasts the factual timeline of serial killer Ed Gein with the narrative presented in the recent Netflix series Monster. Host Paul discusses the real-life influences, such as Gein’s obsession with his mother and the Nazi concentration camp worker Elsa Cootch, and reviews the series' directorial decisions, including musical choices and fictionalized FBI interaction scenes. Understanding this distinction is valuable for viewers wishing to separate documented history from dramatic interpretation in true crime narratives.

Honestly, the series was about as historically accurate as Abraham Lincoln vampire slayer.
They absolutely butchered his story. They need to stick to facts instead of pushing some Hollywood shit
My biggest problem with the series is that it was based on a bunch of “maybes”. Maybe Ed killed his brother, maybe he killed Evelyn Hartley, maybe he killed the two hunters who disappeared. But a “maybe” doesn’t make something true
About 2 minutes in, I said, "I can't believe I was looking forward to this." From there, it only got worse
I finished the first season of mindhunter couple of days ago, and I gotta say much better improvement compared to these series, they don't try to make you feel sympathy for these people or treat them like cartoony evil villains, no the killers in mindhunter are scarily grounded individuals who keep you tense and on edge during the interviews, like you still feel extremely uncomfortable around them even when they're in shackles and having cooperating talks with the agents
The problem with 'artistic license' is that people believe that it happened. They will now believe that Gein did those things because they can't be bothered to check it out.
Growing up in Wisconsin, we all knew who Ed Gein was and what he did. The series about Dahmer was really accurate and extremely disturbing. The Gein story was butchered pretty horribly. Too much Hollywood. Too much of it was inaccurate, but a lot was accurate. It was nothing like Dahmer..

Show started off strong... then took way too much creative license and went full on Ryan Murphy in the latter half.
It was like Hunnam doing an impression of Forrest Gump doing an impression of Kermit the frog.
