ChatGPT isn't going to replace journalists who investigate and uncover news. It's going to replace YouTubers who read the news articles that journalists write after their investigation.

I'm surprised neither had knowledge of Borges. I highly recommend that they read his work, especially Library of Babel (which I believe was what they had in mind in referencing him), as it could be seen as relevant to the concern over the implications of generative ai programs eventually cannibalizing their own data.

Borges: Brilliant 20th century who never wrote a novel, but produced intense, weird short stories, including one about an infinite library. A memorable writer.

I understand what they mean but in my opinion the real issue to watch out for is the tendency for corporations to push off their obligations to systems like this in an attempt to pawn off liability. Imagine your surgery denied coverage because the new case manager bot that your insurance company uses says your doctor's diagnosis is inconsistent.

The largest issue with AGI is that it will be very difficult to determine when we are getting close. Deep learning couldve taken another decade or even a decade less to stumble upon. We have no idea when the next major novel breakthrough will come and from where. Nick Bostrom made an excellent case that AGI has no road map and will be stumbled upon.

5 years ago, GPT was still basically a concept. 3 years ago, it was interesting in parts but seemed a decade away from something the public to get excited about. Yet late in 2022, it basically released to the public and stunned people: it was like a pretty smart friend who seemed to have had a late night: Fairly capable most times in certain areas but could make some silly mistakes. Now with GPT-4? A really, really smart individual in a number of areas who doesn't make mistakes that often in most areas.

He's correct. I tried coming up with backgrounds for D&D magic items, and after a little prodding, all it gave me was the most clichéd tales about elves and good and evil.
