Description

The other night, I watched a man convince a room full of skeptics that reality itself might be negotiable. His name is Jason Ladanye (pronounced “La-DON-yee,” which I only mention because I’ve been saying it wrong in my head for two years). He’s a card mechanic, magician, storyteller, student of human nature, and—if I’m being completely honest—a deeply unsettling dinner companion. We sat down after his show in Oxnard, where I watched otherwise rational adults develop facial tics while Jason calmly shuffled a deck of ordinary Bicycle cards and proceeded to dismantle every assumption they had about luck, skill, trust, probability, and free will. Somewhere between the poker chips, false shuffles, casino scams, and stories about cheating card sharks, I realized this episode wasn’t really about magic at all. It’s about mastery. Jason has spent 40 years handling a deck of cards the way Oscar Peterson handled a piano or Stevie Ray Vaughan handled a guitar. The cards are just the instrument. He's actually manipulating attention, expectation, doubt, ego, and human behavior—usually while smiling like a guy who already knows how the movie ends. Jason demonstrated a few things with a deck of cards that I still can’t explain. Not because I don’t know the answer, but because I genuinely don’t believe the answer exists in the world I thought I understood. If you enjoy conversations about obsession, craftsmanship, psychology, skepticism, or what happens when somebody devotes their entire life to becoming impossibly good at one very strange thing…you’ll love this one. Just don’t play cards with him afterward. A Special Thanks To: @skillsusa — The skills gap is real, and SkillsUSA students are the solution. As a Jason stan, great stuff. Starting out card magic with Jason's material and books got my standards SKY HIGH, and no other books or cardmen come CLOSE to him IMHO. EDIT: After watching the WHOLE THING, I must say, Mike, you're a PHENOMENALLY articulate host. I was sitting and watching you and Jason and I was blown away! This is the BEST Jason interview I've seen to date. Thank you.

Huge fan of Jason's work, I've watched all his interviews I can find and they all seem to be 4-5 years old, right as we were coming out of the pandemic. So nice to get a fresh interview and from another master of his trade. Thank you, Mike, for taking the time with Mr. Ladanye for the rest of us to enjoy.

Jason is a man that is not only a card magician/mechanic, but just a huge fan of excellence in any of it's purest forms whether it's music, sport or skill. Great conversation!

Simply amazing! I love watching Jason work his craft and Mike Rowe was the perfect host and show to share it on. When Jason was talking about making it look like he messed up, that is what Houdini would do to build suspense. He could easily get out of handcuffs, but he would stay behind the screen for an extended period of time until the audience "knew" he couldn't escape. It was only until that point Houdini would emerge victorious! I was a magician back in the 70's and while I did stage work, I preferred coin magic as I always carried half dollars for the impromtu "show me a trick" request. Watching Jason makes me want to start practicing again... Thank you!

Was listening to this on iHeartRadio podcast and after like 20 mins I thought there's no way I'm just gonna listen to the rest of this. I gotta go to YouTube and watch because this sounds like it's worth watching. And it didn't disappoint.
