Description

Loyola Marymount University professor and author Vanessa Diaz joins Court Accountability Action’s MacKenZie Rumage to talk about Bad Bunny’s landmark Super Bowl halftime show, which showcased subtle—and not-so-subtle—messages of unity, Puerto Rican statehood, and what it means to be American. Vanessa and MacKenZie break down the potent symbolism in the halftime show, how the issue of Puerto Rican statehood—and Bad Bunny’s stance—have become more relevant in recent years, and the conservative backlash to the show. Excellent information 🙌. I learned many things I didn’t know about Puerto Rico.

It's absolutely refreshing to have a candid conversation about the entire subject because as the commentator said, as Americans we don't learn that much about Puerto Rico and I also was unaware that they were testing the birth control pill on Puerto Rican women. I'm so sorry for that. And I know that a lot of Africans were subjected to being tested for a lot of the AIDS drugs as well. Very sad!! And it was so nice to hear about all of the symbolism in Bad Bunny's performance because I knew I missed quite a bit of it due to the language barrier. I know some Spanish but not in song so I didn't understand very much of it. But I truly appreciated every part of it. Thank you so much!

Really appreciate this interview! These two women shared important information regarding a pertinent topic. Glad MT isn’t letting its growth diminish its quality.

It’s insulting that Canada was referred to as the 51 state and no mention of actual territories… As a part Hawaiian whose ancestors voted against being part of the US I agree with Puerto Rico having second thoughts!!

Trump was watching the half-time show at a party in his Mar-a-Lago resort, which has a Spanish name. The Superbowl was being played in Santa Clara, also a Spanish name.

Borinquen here, this is the best video summarization of current and past PR that I've heard in a long time. Thank you.
