I think the common denominator is no turbo. I'm afraid we reached the limits and abilities of the ICE engine with regards to reliability/power with the materials we have to play with, Unless you get into higher cost custom builds..... Maybe
Each day I’m thankful for your advice to buy the last Camry V6.
I currently drive a 2019 3.5L V6 with 301 Horsepower and it’s very fun to drive. On long road trips, we get 33 mpg when my wife drives. I just change my ball joints and water pump. I got extended warranty and was both repair was covered. Make sure to get one with great service history and don’t over pay for them because people do not want the V6 because of gas prices.
Buick 3.8 3800 for the win
The 2026 Mazda3 is a great car! As reliable as a Civic or Corolla, with more HP. And no 'start/stop', no 'cylinder deactivation', and no CVT! In fact, their conventional torque converted automatic transmissions are made by AISIN, the best transmission manufacturer in the world!
I have a Jep Wrangler with the 3.6L Pentastar V6 and 6 speed manuals transmission. Rock solid and this engine has been a workhorse for CDJR for over 15 years. Also had it in our Grand Caravan and Grand Cherokee without issue.
Have a 3.5L Honda V6 in my Ridgeline, over 40k miles now, runs very well. Did rent a Mazda inline 6 CX90 recently. A good engine and a fun car to drive, but my wife could not stand the rotary dial. We will probably grab the 2.0L Hybrid CRV in the coming year. One more comment, you know a great deal about vehicles that I have not seen on many auto youtube channels. I know, since I have worked in autoparts for over 30 years as a Product Manager at DENSO, Marketing Manager at NGK and as a Director of OE Sales at MPA which remans starters and alternators. Keep up the great work!

I wanted the Mazda cx-5 in late 2024 but instead, went with the '25 Subaru Outback. Ground clearance is over an inch more. 8.7- 7.6 = 1.1. I drove through two blizzards in 2026 and used all the ground clearance. I dunno if the Mazda would have made it home in the storm.
Great information! Thanks so much for putting this together.
