70th Anniversary of Montgomery Bus Boycott: Where Do We Go From Here?

Commemorating 70 years since the Montgomery Bus Boycott’s launch, national leaders convene to discuss adapting Civil Rights movement strategies to confront modern attacks on voting rights and equity.

Short Summary

  • Review the strategic blueprint of the 1955 boycott, emphasizing women's foundational roles and the three-pronged effort (boycott, legal, rallying).
  • Analyze modern political and judicial threats, including efforts to regress civil rights gains ("Jim Crow 2.0") and the politicization of the Supreme Court.
  • Highlight the necessity of multi-generational strategy, sustained organizing, and "playing the long game" in the courts.
  • Discuss economic empowerment strategies, including collective action like boycotts, and the need for a theology of justice in leadership.

This event, rooted in the sanctuary where the movement began, provides critical lessons on strategy, power building, and sustained action required to bridge the gap between America’s promise and its reality.
