Nucleotids assembling into RNA when passing through volcanic glass is a mind-blowing discovery. It provides a start for the "RNA world" hypothesis. Thanks Anton for the great insight, as usual!
I'm so glad that Anton doesn't go the "Everything they told you was a lie" or "Everything you thought you knew is wrong" way for his titles when he gives us an update of what is the current understanding of a subject.
starting life is easy , hanging onto life well that is the question . Great subject Anton
This video kind of makes it sound like life is more inevitable than unique.
You mention black smokers several times, but there are other types of hydrothermal vents like white smokers and alkaline vents (like the Lost City vents) that are cooler and possibly more amenable to the gentle biochemistry of life. The alkaline vents are considered good candidates for the metabolism-first scenarios pioneered by researchers like Michael Russell and popularized by Nick Lane. Maybe chemicals from nearby black smokers played a contributory role as well.
Very fascinating discoveries lately! Love your videos Anton!
Thanks as always! One thing to keep in mind is that even if we do find very specific or even rare circumstances that starts life on Earth, that doesn't necessarily mean that's the ONLY way life can start. That just happens to be the way it started here.
One of my favorite topics! Love you Anton!
I always learn something from Anton's videos.
8:25 You said "boron" and I heard "moron" then laughed at myself and said, "that tracks" 😂
