It's noteworthy that Joe McCarthy also tried to wrongfully get rid of Voice of America.
As an American living abroad i listened to VOA on shortwave radio for 20 years. It's powerful transmitters could be heard anywhere in the world. It was a beacon of trusted information to listeners all over the world who could not get world news otherwise. Shutting it down is an absolute shot in the foot by the myopic amateurs surrounding trump who i bet have never heard a minute of it's programming.
Have worked in media on four continents, and always admired the quality of VOA production both in terms of form and content. This is a major loss for world media.

So sad..I was barely a teenager when I listened to VOA in the Philippines when the US celebrated their Bicentennial in 1976.
