My theory for dreams is that the brain needs to be working at all times. For example, if you stare at a mirror for too long you start getting side effects and hallucinate due to the lack of inactivity

the majority of dreams i can remember are of me winning money in gambling centers and im thinking the reason i remember them well is cause when i wake up im flat broke and disappointed
