There’s zero reason we don’t have year-round, full-time NFL refs. Seeing a bunch of 50+ year old CEOs, lawyers, and dentists determining the outcome of NFL games is wild to me.

The most telling part was when Goff said at the interview, "I know I'm going to get fined for this but..." just because he was saying that they told the ref 68 was eligible. Why even have press conferences? You're not allowed to say what's on your mind. We will never get the honest perspective of anyone in the NFL because they are forced to say what they have to say.

As a former lineman who had a play to catch a short yardage pass in highschool. It was drilled in my brain a million times to report by my coach my offensive coordinator and my quarterback ain’t no way in hell a PRO didn’t report. I ain’t buyin it.

How this still happens in today's NFL is insane

Even the NRL (National rugby league) in Australia has full time refs, and our league has a $10m salary cap instead of the $220m NFL cap. The NFL has the resources to employ full time refs. It's almost suspicious that they don't.

The thing that makes this worse for me is that from the moment the ref reported 70 as eligible, whatever happened after, someone was getting screwed. If you call the penalty, the Lions get (rightfully) livid, as it happened here. If, however, you don't, the Cowboys get screwed, as they didn't get told that 68 was eligible by the ref and didn't cover him! Between the numerous offensive holding calls missed (by both teams' offences), the missed PI on St Brown, the phantom tripping call on the Cowboys' last drive...the refs weren't rigging the game. They were just bad, period.

I, too, appreciated the officiating of the Rose Bowl. During the game I had thought, the NFL could learn something if they were paying attention. It just felt smooth, and was almost surprising when it became a factor in the viewing experience. And that was from a couch. I bet it was exponentially better, live, or even at a bar or other public watching event.

Initial excuse from Allen was that "70 had reported all day". Maybe I'm wrong, but the only instance of him reporting prior to this play was once early in the first quarter.

100% agree with the points made, make it a full-time job. Get the work in, work in training camps. (would also help teams) Would also allow the refs to be held accountable with a fine for a bad call. Good refs geta bonus for working playoff games. Hell right now, the Lions would pay for the whole deal.

The “skinny” I heard was that Brad Allen had skipped out of the pre-game meeting, with the coaches. I would think that he thought, by missing the “special play” instructions, by Dan Campbell ; he had an out, to do what he did.
