Why Is America's Most Patriotic Coin Being Made In Germany? The Making Of The Trades Of America Coin

Lots of comments on the Trades of America pure silver coin, currently on sale to benefit the mikeroweWORKS Foundation. The overall response to this fundraiser has been overwhelmingly positive. In fact, only a few coins remain, which is great news for mikeroweWORKS. There have been some questions, however. For instance, people want to know why a coin honoring the American worker, was minted in Germany. “Why, Mike? Why?” “How could you?? “Seriously? Germany???” “NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!” Obviously, I would have preferred to have these coins minted in America, but the challenges were fundamental. For starters, the coin needed to be legal tender. US Money Reserve offers rounds and bars whose weight, content, and purity are backed by an actual government. Legal tender makes that possible, and their customers have come to expect it. In America, however, only coins struck by the U.S. Mint can be legal tender, and all such programs in the United States need to be approved by Congress. In other words, it would have taken an act of Congress—literally—to mint these coins in the US. Also, I’m told the technology necessary to make a coin this detailed and intricate does not exist in the States. USMR relied on a company in Lichenstein called CIT, to render our initial designs into a three-dimensional format where the artistic details were perfected before being minted. The whole process was fascinating, and I was invited to participate in every step.
