Even the WSJ Says Trump's Post Is Dangerous
Responding to DC Shooting: Trump’s Escalation and Leadership Deficit
Analyze the immediate political fallout following a tragedy in D.C. and learn why traditional presidential responses to flashpoints are necessary for national strength.
Short Summary
- A recent shooting involving an Afghan national serving in the D.C. National Guard has prompted extremist rhetoric from Donald Trump.
- Trump escalated by pushing for the denaturalization of citizens who "undermine domestic tranquility" and advocating for "reverse migration."
- Experts warn this rhetoric abandons allies and damages long-term U.S. national security interests, citing The Wall Street Journal's rebuke.
- The discussion contrasts Trump's polarizing approach with historical precedent, like George W. Bush after 9/11, emphasizing the need for presidents to lower, not raise, national temperature during crises.
JVL and Sarah Longwell discuss a fatal shooting of two National Guard members by an Afghan national in D.C. They pivot from mourning the tragedy to analyzing how Donald Trump immediately weaponized the event to promote radical, anti-American immigration policies. This conversation highlights the crucial role of presidential leadership in preserving the rule of law over political rage during national moments of stress.

Two Guardsmen were shot, and he wants to make major changes to domestic policies. Hundreds of Children are shot, and nothing happens.
A white male goes into a school and kills children. We say thoughts and prayers. Do nothing! A Afghan man kills and Trump uses this to become a racist King.
So, a war veteran — who is apparently suffering from emotional, mental and/or psychiatric distress, in a country with little to no gun regulation and 300,000,000 firearms in circulation, drives across the country and targets military members who should never have been deployed to those streets in the first place — goes off. While Agent Orange didn’t pull the trigger, he is certainly creating an atmosphere for tragedy by setting up these troops to be in harms way For. No. Valid. Reason.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. It is absolutely wrong for this guy to shoot anybody. The reason Trump has been deploying the Guard is that he's been hoping for this kind of a tragedy. But has everyone forgotten that we lied to these people who were helping us in Afghanistan. We don't know what or who this guy lost as a result of our lies.
JVL’s first instinct was right. They shouldn’t have been deployed. This is on Trump.
Retired Army here. Unfortunately I think her death will be used as a justification to increase deportations and vilify immigrants. The rich and powerful use our troops as pawns.
He wants the world to burn as long as he profits from the ashes
He didn’t call her terrible he called her stupid three different times. He’s the most disgusting person. I can’t stand him.
Trumps reaction to 9/11 was that one of his buildings was now the tallest in the city. That's alone says it all.
