Reinterpreting Jesus: Scholarship, Gnosticism, and the True Message of Love Over Doctrine

Determine the four facts scholars agree upon regarding the historical Jesus, completely separate from scripture. Discover expert analysis arguing that organized Christianity was a calculated political invention serving the Roman Empire, directly subverting Jesus' original teachings.

Short Summary

  • Establish the core tenets of mainstream Christianity and identify key points of confusion or conflict found within those beliefs.
  • Review the four empirically agreed-upon historical facts related to Jesus’ life, teacher, death, and successor.
  • Analyze the true message of Jesus, derived from the Gospel of Thomas, focusing on internal reality, self-knowledge, and radical forgiveness.
  • Contrast the historical Jesus’ decentralized spiritual message with the centralized, authority-driven Catholic Church doctrine developed later.

This lecture contrasts conventional Christian doctrine with scholarly consensus and the teachings attributed to Jesus in non-canonical texts like the Gospel of Thomas. The primary goal is to strip away later theological layers to uncover Jesus' original philosophy—a message centered on individual internal realization and universal love, especially toward enemies—revealing why this message proved politically threatening to established Roman power structures.

They wanted Jesus killed because he claimed to be the messiah they were waiting for, but they wanted a messiah that would conquer the world for them. They didn't like that He subverted their expectations and preached about love, forgiveness, etc. and he was accruing a massive following of people. They saw him as a threat to their religious hegemony and a threat to their plans for global domination.

As a Rasta man, I was able to link today's class with some songs that taught me the same lessons as today's class. It shows how all religions are more or less the same in their teachings. I'm sharing with you'll as my classmates; 1 Be Honest to yourself-Culture/Joseph Hill 2 Collie Field Roots music - Norris Reid. 3 One Stone -Culture One thing i realised as i was trying to find myself is that; no one can tell you what is true but once you discover it, you will know because a spark will glow in YOU.

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
