People keep saying "democracy" while forgetting why a republic was adopted in the first place. A republic was not chosen because it sounded better. It was chosen because the danger was never only a king or dictator. The danger was power itself, wherever it concentrated. The people were intended to remain sovereign, meaning they were the source of authority, while government was only entrusted with delegated powers. Government was meant to serve authority, not become authority. The problem comes when "democracy" is expanded into a system where officials, institutions, and administrative structures increasingly determine the people's interests, priorities, needs, and acceptable sacrifices while still claiming to act in the people's name. That reverses the relationship. Government no longer carries out the people's will. It increasingly interprets it, defines it, and presents it back to the people as their own will. This is why remembering the republic matters. A republic is the house everyone claims to own but no one is living in. Everyone is arguing over parties, personalities, and policies while the structure designed to keep power from becoming self-authorizing quietly sits unattended. Concentrated authority rarely arrives saying, "the people no longer rule." It arrives speaking the language of sovereignty itself. It says it acts for the people, protects the people, preserves democracy, and defends national interests while simultaneously shifting the practical position of sovereignty from the people to the institutions claiming to act on their behalf. So there is the inversion: "We the People" gradually shifts from the original source of authority to the governing officials speaking in its name and that is the "Democracy" you hear modern commentators talking about today.
