THIS STORY HIT HARD! Full Length Watch Alongs & Early Access: https://www.patreon.com/thereelrejects -Gift Someone (Or Yourself) An RR Tee! https://shorturl.at/hekk2 Tara Erickson & Jon Maturan step into one of the most beloved music biopics ever made, bringing you their Selena (1997) reaction, recap, commentary, breakdown, analysis, and full movie spoiler review!! Tara Erickson & Jon Maturan react to and break down Selena (1997), the biographical drama directed by Gregory Nava that tells the story of Tejano music icon Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers, Out of Sight) delivers her breakout performance as Selena, capturing the singer’s rise from performing in her family band to becoming one of the most influential Latin artists of all time, alongside Edward James Olmos (Blade Runner, Stand and Deliver) as her driven father and manager Abraham Quintanilla, Jon Seda (Chicago P.D., The Pacific) as Chris Pérez, and Constance Marie (George Lopez, Switched at Birth) as Marcella Quintanilla. The film opens with Selena’s iconic Houston Astrodome performance before flashing back to her early beginnings, where the family faces rejection, racism, and financial struggles while trying to break into the music industry. As highlighted in the reaction, the journey from small gigs to massive crowds is both inspiring and intense, especially as Selena navigates her identity as a Mexican-American artist, balancing language, culture, and expectations while finding her voice on stage and off . As her career takes off, the story deepens with her relationship with Chris Pérez, the tension with her father’s strict control, and her growing ambition beyond music, including fashion and business ventures. The film captures Selena’s charisma, work ethic, and connection with her fans, leading to major milestones like her Grammy win and plans for an English crossover album that could have taken her to an even bigger global stage. Everything builds toward a devastating final act that completely caught the hosts off guard, as Selena’s life is tragically cut short at just 23 years old. Tara & Jon react in real time to the shocking turn, reflecting on her legacy, her impact, and the heartbreaking reality of how much more she had ahead of her.#Selena #SelenaMovie #JenniferLopez #MovieReaction #TrueStory #Biopic #SelenaQuintanilla #Tejano #FilmReaction #reaction Follow *Tara Erickson* https://www.youtube.com/@TaraErickson https://www.instagram.com/taraerickson/ https://twitter.com/thetaraerickson Follow *Jon Maturan* Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jonmaturan/?hl=en ELVIS (2022) REACTION: https://youtu.be/9_7lGvX4_Vs BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY (2018) REACTION: https://youtu.be/wvI7C55lkr4 THE GREATEST SHOWMAN (2017) REACTION: https://youtu.be/0pptR7FP1qg K-POP: DEMON HUNTERS (2025) REACTION: https://youtu.be/xEkLm2Vvwrk 0:00 Checking In! 1:28 Selena Reaction 1:04:47 Selena Review Intense Suspense by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Support The Channel By Getting Some REEL REJECTS Apparel! https://www.rejectnationshop.com/ RR Clips & Shorts Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ReelRejectsClips Follow TheReelRejects On The Socials: IG: https://www.instagram.com/reelrejects/ TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@thereelrejects?lang=en TWITTER: https://twitter.com/thereelrejects FB: https://www.facebook.com/TheReelRejects/ Music Used In Ad: Hat the Jazz by Twin Musicom is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Happy Alley by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Head Editor: https://www.instagram.com/prapermedia Supervising Producer: https://twitter.com/nerdchronic?lang=en Co-Editor: Greg Alba Co-Editor: John Humphrey Music In Video: Airport Lounge - Disco Ultralounge by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Follow & Listen to Us Wherever You Get Your Podcasts!! - Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3XHMwbveiznxSOGxN9XT0M - Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5tZWdhcGhvbmUuZm0vc3Rhci13YXJzLXRhbGs - Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-reel-rejects-tv-movie-recaps/id1616339990 - Audible: https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Apocalypse-Podcast/B08JJP58FG PLAYLISTS: Trailer Reactions & Reviews: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-bIhJVeYWw9ZsLdoAQFpx38s2hhyFgDe Movie Reviews: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-bIhJVeYWw-comtadVs8b9JsZEWHUyr8 Youtube Video Reactions & Discussions: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-bIhJVeYWw_qwcPsN_vOxXC6IVzrOQYG Sketches & Short Films: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-bIhJVeYWw_zWuTRfBOUP3aYyIYRzc2y

Selena’s Birthday is in two days. She would have been turning 55.

“Anything for Selenas!” Is still quoted till this day. As a Texas native her music is still played everywhere till this day and is still crazy popular. And they have a statue of her in Corpus Christi right off the beach.

Fun facts: all the singing was Selena’s actual voice. Jlo only sang a bit of “Como la flor” with the white outfit when the stage was going to collapse and Chris’s guitar solo when he was auditioning for Abraham and introduced in the movie, when you see the hands only, thats actually the real Chris playing the solo, his hands, not just the audio 😮

I remember watching this movie in my Texas high school Spanish class and when we got to the ending scene and Dreaming of You was playing, you could just hear a bunch of teenagers sniffling and trying not to cry in the dark lol

3:03 Those are Selena's real fans that showed up to show tribute, as she had just passed not too long before the filming, the crowd obviously was enormous, as it should've been. I remember how much of an impact it was even in the black community and I was only 7 when she passed.

There’s an amazing video of Brie Larson meeting Jennifer Lopez for the first time at the Golden Globes, and Brie is actually crying in front of her, saying how much the movie Selena inspired her to become an actress. Then Jennifer starts to tear up and they both hug and say how much they love each other‘s work. It really is a beautiful moment.
