The Real Story Behind Netflix’s Nathan Carman and The Family Murders
The Twisted Tragedy of Nathan Carman: Murder, Missing Mother, and Massive Inheritance
Discover the shocking inconsistencies surrounding Nathan Carman’s week lost at sea and how the investigation quickly focused on his suspicious survival, a grandfather’s murder, and a multi-million dollar estate.
Short Summary
- Nathan Carman survived seven days lost at sea after his mother, Linda, vanished during a fishing trip, immediately sparking suspicion among investigators.
- Prior to the trip, Nathan was the prime suspect in his grandfather John’s recent murder, raising immediate questions about motive centering on a massive inheritance.
- Subsequent legal findings revealed Nathan allegedly drilled holes in his boat before departure, and an oceanographer proved his survival trajectory was scientifically impossible based on his timeline.
This episode dissects the timeline detailing the strained relationship between Nathan (diagnosed with Asperger's) and his mother, the suspicious circumstances of his grandfather’s 2013 shooting, and the crucial forensic evidence that emerged long after Nathan was rescued. The narrative ultimately leads to Nathan’s arrest for murder before he took his own life in jail, leaving both major cases officially unresolved.

Okay but how messed up is it that an insurance company would rather pay to bring a world-renowned oceanographer out of retirement than pay for your boat
He lived in my small town when all this happened. His grandfather's Christmas light display every year was phenomenal
This zooming in and out constantly in the edit is making me a little sea sick… no pun intended(?)
Great coverage but all the panning in and out is making this hard to watch...
I bet if you find that boat, you find the gun....
He blamed his mom for putting him in the institute. Maybe he blamed his mom for his grandpa's murder, so he took her on a fishing trip..
As an ex-detective I found this case to be twistier than a corkscrew. So many dark family dynamics due to Nathan's grandfather's wealth. Makes you wonder what the family would have been like, had they not had all that money. Perhaps still alive? Thanks for covering it.
Just wanted to clarify that the midnight fishing trip isn’t uncommon. My family and I fish a LOT, but my particular favorite is night fishing! I live in Louisiana, so there are so many different place to fish, but the time varies for what and where we’re fishing. Thanks for another great video, Annie! 🫶🏻
1:50 I’m sorry but any “true crime” case that makes it to Netflix before sentencing or within a year of the crime , makes me feel it’s not 100% real.
53:53 I thought it was hilarious how Nathan’s lawyer/defense team claimed, in the Netflix doc, that ‘oceanography’ and using the data from buoys to determine water currents and whatnot was considered “”junk science.”” Those buoys, that are the size of a small car and cost as much as $100,000 a piece, are packed with research-grade instruments that measure precise data. But, all that fancy water movement stuff is just “junk science.” Lmao
