Evaluating Price vs. Quality: Which Matcha Tastes Better?

Discover if paying significantly more for ceremonial grade matcha actually improves the flavor profile across various preparations, from standard tea to rich tiramisu and savory yaki.

Short Summary

  • Price differences for matcha are extreme, ranging from $1.50 to $74 per ounce.
  • Culinary grade (cheaper) matcha performed better than ceremonial grade in hot tea, tiramisu, and iced latte tests.
  • Lily explains that ceremonial grade uses younger leaves, while culinary grade is picked later.
  • The expensive ceremonial grade finally proved superior in a hot, savory dish where heat enhanced its inherent qualities.

This episode tests whether the substantial financial investment in expensive matcha is justified by superior taste. Hosts Rhett and Link compare high-end and low-end matcha across four different dishes prepared by the Mythical Kitchen team, often finding the less expensive culinary grade preferable. This analysis provides clarity on when high cost pays off and when it does not.

3:30 if matcha has a fishy taste it means that it's been oxidized because of improper storage (or it's low quality)

The matcha craze of a few years ago was bad, every chain place tried to do a matcha drink and every one failed to take into account it must be brewed at lower temperatures or it can taste like fish.

Link really put a lot of emphasis on see @ 0:15 as he was going for "sea"...since he thought matcha was from the sea 🤣🤣🤣

Cheap, low quality matcha tastes like what those fish food flakes smell like.

casual reminder that there isnt a 'matcha plant'. all tea is from the same plant, camellia sinensis (unless its herbal because that doesnt have actual tea in it) and will taste, look, and smell different depending on when it in harvested, how it is processed, and how it is brewed. the reason matcha was so expensive before the craze was because there is a big difference between ceremonial, premium, and culinary matcha, with ceremonial being the highest quality. looking at the color of the powder is a good indicator of the quality of matcha if you are unsure. source: used to sell loose leaf tea for several years

Link: “Lily, explain what matcha is to everyone who doesn’t know, as I do, that it comes from the sea.”
