Description

This video essay analyzes Arthur Mitchell (aka The Trinity Killer) from Dexter (owned by Showtime). Of all the villains in Dexter, Trinity was the one who changed the course of the show the most, for better or for worse. But on top of leaving a mark on Dexter, Arthur Mitchell is a fascinating character who embodies repetition cycles and trauma re-enactment. This video delves into the psychology of Arthur Mitchell to understand why he is the way he is. Think of it as The Trinity Killer from Dexter explained. I had heard a lot about how great this character was before I started this season, so I was eager to get into it not knowing what to expect. Boy did he deliver. Probably the most upsetting character I've ever seen on a tv show, the irrational and uncomfortably pathological nature of his crimes, where they make no sense from the outside but seem so compulsive for him, the fact that he's himself a victim further victimizing the world in such a horrific way lends another layer of tragedy to him, and the fact that he continues to spread his evil and trauma even after his death gives you such a sense of visceral discomfort.

SO glad I found this channel. This is so helpful in writing characters, thank you! The first line I had to write down in my character development notebook, "The greatest villains don't just test the protagonist, they change them forever." Absolutely beautiful.

So many people I've talked to about Dexter not only said they LOVED the series, but also said they stopped watching after Rita died. That's a crazy presense for both Rita and Trinity in this series. A villain that paralleled and opposed Dexter so well, and a love interest that not only won the hearts of so many fans but also was such a driving force for Dexter's character growth, coming together at a season finale that left so much impact that fans just stopped watching but loved what they saw none the less. I wasn't expecting that kind of storytelling when I started watching Dexter, and come to think of it I can't remember another series doing this. Pretty much everyone missed Rita so much and hated Trinity so much, its like they were family members and arch nemesis for the fans too

In the one role where John Lithgow didn't play John Lithgow he played one of the best villains ever put on film, he absolutely nailed it.

When perfect acting & impeccable writing meet - you get the brilliant John Lithgow as The Trinity Killer

2:02 Important: antisocial does NOT mean asocial. People who suffer from antisocial personality disorder very often seem charismatic and even extroverted.

The irony is that as impactful as Trinity is, the real mistake was from Dexter. Dexter had the jump on him and could have taken him out at virtually anytime and instead wanted to play cat and mouse to learn from him. Same with Saxon. The villains who did the most damage to Dexter were only in that position because of Dexter himself. Ice Truck Killer was the only one who really was a step ahead of Dexter the whole way, and he only failed because, like Dexter, his goal wasn't to kill him.
