Disney vs. YouTube TV: Evaluating the Streaming Leverage Tactics

Analyze why Disney is pulling critical channels from YouTube TV, explore the competitive playbook against streaming giants, and assess the resulting impact on consumer choice and stock valuation.

Short Summary

  • Disney threatens to remove ESPN and ABC content if YouTube TV does not agree to higher carriage rates, suggesting leverage against competitors like Hulu.
  • Panelists largely assign blame to Disney for trying to exploit YouTube TV's growth (15% viewership increase) to force terms favoring its own platforms.
  • Stock analysis suggests Disney's current valuation is lagging Netflix, but strategic leadership change could unlock trillion-dollar potential within a decade. The discussion centers on the expiring carriage deal between Disney and YouTube TV, focusing on whether Disney is using its content monopoly (especially sports) to stifle competition from YouTube TV or bolster its Hulu service. The group concludes that Disney is employing the same aggressive playbook used against Netflix previously, signaling strategic shifts in the streaming landscape.

Hard to believe Disney was once a Sunday night staple for the whole family to sit and watch with a bowl of popcorn, a cream soda and a blanket to snuggle in. Now it's all greed.

This is exactly why monopolies are illegal whether you wanna classify this as a monopoly or not, they have stake in every part of the entertainment business so they can leverage their companies and sick their bullies on their opponents and completely disrupt the market .Disney is falling from Grace. I cannot stand that company.
