What's so cute is that Drew Barrymore (the little sister) actually thought ET was real the whole time they were filming. Spielberg found out about this and made sure there was always someone operating the animatronic of ET whenever she'd come over and talk to him so her imagination wouldn't be ruined. She'd even have lunch with him 🥺 So all their scenes together are genuine. She actually thought she was talking to ET.
When Gen Xers were at our best. Just doing whatever we wanted as long as we were home before the street lights came on.
It's difficult for younger folk to appreciate how huge movies like Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters and E.T. in the late 70s / early 80s were, for there is nothing comparable in terms of impact today. It's not just that droves of people went to watch them, it's that they were absolute game changers from the get go that everyone talked about for ages and which embedded themselves in our culture going forward. And here we are, 40-50 years later and they're still part of our psyche.
Fun Fact: E.T.'s species, known as Asogians, are indeed part of the Star Wars universe. They make a cameo appearance in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, where they are seen in the Galactic Senate. This inclusion was a nod from George Lucas to Steven Spielberg, fulfilling a promise after Spielberg included Star Wars references in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Saw it in the theater at age 6 with my family. It was the first time I ever saw my older brother (he was 13) cry. Made me feel better about my own tears.
Wasn't Drew just the cutest thing you'd ever seen? So adorable!
What brought him back to life was the spaceship coming closer. Elliott even said "does this mean they're coming?"
21:18 Speak N Spell 😎 all the OGs remember
I'm 63, I have loved this since I saw it in the theater. Had to hold the tears back. Such an iconic film for my life.
46:23 From the start of the escape/chase to the end of the movie: this is John Williams on Fire 🔥❣️⚡️✨👌
