Description

What is escape velocity? On this explainer, Neil DeGrasse Tyson and co-hosts Chuck Nice and Gary O’Reilly explain the best place to kick a ball into space. How hard do you have to kick a soccer ball to get it into orbit? We talk about the top speed of a soccer ball and Earth’s escape velocity. Where in the solar system could you kick a ball out into space? How fast does an object have to go to leave the whole solar system? classic episode, knew the answer was “yeah, no” and still learned stuff, fart jokes, learned why cereal is called cereal, and even got Neil’s thing-going-fast sound. 👍

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the fact that the ball would probably explode on your foot giving a ball that much energy. And even if it didn't, the ball would likely rip apart before it got into orbit from the friction in the air.

Hope to hear what you think about the Titan sub and if you could educate us about fluid dynamics at that depths. Is there anything someone on board can do when they hear metal deforming/pressure sensors on board (if any) goes over the limit , try and steer the vehicle up and not go down any more? I hear it is an almost immediate end , could you more accurately predict how many seconds it would take to implode. And how the quick compression leads to outward blast\shockwave after?

If there were an asteroid field large and dense enough to jump between asteroids, how would you play soccer on it? What sort of rules would you have to set?

I learned on this video that baseballs ate also wound up the same way as golf balls which I used to find as a youth near my house and took them apart to find out what was inside of them. They are also made with long strands are rubber and the core can be either solid rubber or liquid.

When are we going to get a Things You Thought You Knew from Chuck. I want an explainer from Chuck. A Chuckplainer if you would. Doesn't even have to be science related. Just want Chuck to shine and show the mysterious things he knows

Another cool thing is that “Escape Velocity” is a scalar so it doesn’t matter what direction you throw an object to, if you throw it fast enough it will be out our Earth’s Gravitational pull. Shouldn’t it be called “Escape Speed”?
