Description

Why does magic fool us so easily? Is our perception of reality just an illusion? Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-host Gary O’Reilly explore the neuroscience behind magic with magician Teller (of Penn & Teller) and neuroscientist Susana Martinez-Conde. We dive into the world of sensory perception, illusions, and the tricks magicians use to exploit the brain’s blind spots. How do our brains construct reality rather than simply perceiving it? Susana breaks down the science behind misdirection and cognitive illusions, revealing how our minds take shortcuts that magicians cleverly manipulate. Why haven’t we evolved to see through magic tricks? What role does survival play in shaping how we perceive the world? What happens when you don’t notice changes right in front of you? We explore how magicians, like scientists, seek to understand the limits of human cognition. From change blindness to attentional blindness, we discuss how magic tricks exploit cognitive gaps. How does humor help magicians distract an audience? What can neuroscience learn from the study of stage magic? We also examine the ethical questions surrounding magic and deception. Should magicians expose fraudulent psychics who exploit belief? Can illusions help teach critical thinking? Plus, learn where the rabbit coming out of the top hat came from and other magic lore. Thing I like about Penn and Teller is that they don't treat you dumb. They show a respect to the audience that a lot of magicians don't do as well. Like, "Hello, Im going to try to trick you and we're both going to have fun doing it"

Magicians like Teller should be on every political commentary panel educating us on the deceptive tactics of politicians.

I would love a full episode with just teller. I love hearing him talk, he's very eloquent and intelligent. That's not to say your other two hosts here aren't brilliant in their own right, they certainly are, but I'd love to see more of teller!

Listening to Teller speak has blown my mind! Not that I thought he was mute but I grew up watching his stuff and I never thought I'd see him break character any day! Such a legend!

It was fascinating hearing Susana Martinez-Conde talk about illusions and how we process stimuli in our environment - I really enjoyed her participation in this episode!

Slight of Mind is a fantastic book. I'm using it to help design illusions for a Broadway stage show.

I'd love to hear the full Teller interview without it being cut into a larger presentation.
