That's extremely sad about the child. That was someones child. Breaks my heart.
My husband is a former coast guard. He has described bodies he’s pulled out of the water just as the author of the first story did here. He still has nightmares and ptsd from those experiences. I’m sure that was a horrible experience to discover that child’s body. ❤
My mom just celebrated her 99th b- day 2weeks ago. Still living pretty independently and sharp as tack. Her short term is a bot troubled, but she's all there. Bungi jumped in her 70's and parachuted at 83, then again at 85. Amazing lady! 1927 was a great year to be born it seems.
I sent Joel my story about when I got swamp ass at Disney but apparently it didn’t make the cut :(
2nd story reminded me of the Night Folk in Red Dead Redemption 2. Painted in white, silent but brutal. They were the most frightening NPCs in the game.
There are stories of catfish the size of Volkswagen Beetles in Lake Mead, living in the deep water at the base of Hoover Dam. I've heard maintenance divers use cages after reports of whiskerfish big enough to swallow a person whole. There's definitely enough food for them and no swim bladders means they don't float when they die - they probably just turn into a snack for their even larger brethren 😳
As someone who was born and raised in Mississippi. The Pearl River and swamps are notoriously known to be haunted and extremely dangerous. Those POWs also helped build a replica of the Mississippi River and its basins to help determine where the river would flood. It’s located right outside of Jackson close to the old POW camp.
Scariest swap encounter I ever had was me and my dad and our friend Carl were out in the swamps at like 11:30 at night froggin and at one point, we went to go check a jug line and we were shining a flashlight around and saw thousands of eyes staring at us. Turns out we accidentally stopped in an alligator nesting area! Everything was going good and I was throwing scraps to the baby alligator’s until we heard a loud SPLASH and when shining the flashlight over to where it was we saw BIG MAMA gator swimming our way so we started up the boat and took off! That was scary as all hell seeing that in the pitch black night of the swamp.
Damn just when I think I’m desensitized Let’s Read goes “hold my beer”. That story with the child got me
