President and CEO Dr. Tonya Matthews says the museum will not lose a single day of operation, but the decision reflects major shifts in government, corporate and foundation funding. She says institutions with explicit commitments to inclusion are facing growing pressure while funders reconsider what and whom they are willing to support. Despite welcoming more than half a million visitors before its third anniversary, the museum needs $6.5 million through the end of the year to avoid the furlough burden and closer to $10 million for greater stability.
