Description

In 2008, Morley Safer reported on the debate on whether it's worth it for the U.S. Mint to continue producing copper pennies. Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced it plans to begin phasing out the production of new pennies in 2026. "60 Minutes" is the most successful television broadcast in history. Offering hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments and profiles of people in the news, the broadcast began in 1968 and is still a hit, over 50 seasons later, regularly making Nielsen's Top 10. The timing is impeccable, and the narrator’s voice and diction are spot-on!

Maybe if you could still cash them in at banks for free instead of paying a percentage to use the machine at the supermarket people would get them back into circulation instead of hoarding their change. That way they wouldn't need to make so many more.

The nostalgia of this broadcast is so mid 2000s coded.

Canada ditched its "penny" and uses Swedish rounding; if it's 1-2 cents it's rounded down to 0 if it's 3 or 4 cents it's rounded up to 5 cents. Same goes for the 6 or 7 and 8 or 9. People quickly got used to it and our pockets felt lighter.

Such an interesting question and honestly, long overdue. When you think about the cost of making a penny or a nickel today… it kind of flips the whole idea of “small change” on its head This episode really makes you realize how many systems we keep running out of habit, not logic. Sometimes it’s not about tradition, it’s about evolution. And maybe it’s time we rethink what actually makes cents in our economy today. Loved this dive into the hidden layers of something we use every day without even thinking. 👏
