To younger devs, be a good steward with your money today, save, invest, compound, start your own ecom or whatever, and most importantly don't treat a high paying W2 job as something you will be doing in your 50s+. Treat it as a windfall and know your numbers and at what age to exit. Go build cool stuff. --- Newly retired mid 40's ex Principal at FAANG.
I see why Fire TV is so buggy. It's the me first mindset.
On that point about 'losing the COE culture'. As you've said in some orgs, it's treated as 'punishment' or a weapon to use against other teams. As a result, it has lost its original purpose, and naturally, there's pushback against writing COEs.
Another banger of a podcast. Thank you Steve!
On the topic of AI, there is a lot of learning that will be lost. I had a colleague whose mantra was “pain and suffering” which the implication was that through pain and suffering you would find the answer. The way I see it, many developers will forgo this pain and suffering and therefore learning for short term gain. It’s possible that they never learn the muscles necessary to become a good developer. What’s lost here is not just the ability to program efficiently and independently but also pattern recognition. You can stare at a problem so long that you start to realize that what you’re solving has parallels to something else that already exists and this realization is lost when you take the easy way out. Regardless, AI will be a pivotal tool in the industry and we have to adopt and adapt but I would not compare it to previous transitions from vim to IDE, this is a novel disruption to the industry. My prediction on AI in the next 3 years would be that I expect AI to provide a net benefit to the execution of projects but a net negative to innovation as a whole.
"And that's why you use VIM kids". As an Emacs user, I lol'd
The question at ~ 20 min 40 seconds is pretty insightful - "such an honor to know a guy with superpowers" VS "wait, how much of this was even you?"
I'm fairly confident that Shepherd tickets are going to keep me employed for the foreseeable future...
Happy to see you out speaking in public again CB!
