Two Teens Blackout and Commit Murder…Or Did They? | Kent Heitholt
The Wrong Men Convicted: Unraveling the Kent Heitholt Murder Cover-Up
Explore the highly controversial 2001 Kent Heitholt murder case where physical evidence excluded initial suspects, key testimony collapsed under scrutiny, and two men served years for a crime potentially committed by someone else.
Short Summary
- Physical evidence recovered at the scene, including fingerprints and DNA, failed to match the men who later confessed.
- The primary confessor, Chuck Ericson, eventually recanted crucial elements of his highly detailed story, admitting details were fabricated based on public reports.
- The prosecution's key eyewitness testified under oath that his positive identification of Ryan Ferguson was a factual lie he told out of fear and a desire to cooperate.
This episode dissects the shocking spiral of the investigation into the death of sports editor Kent Heitholt in Columbia, Missouri. We track how initial evidence suggested a random attack, but the subsequent investigation relied heavily on a troubled teenager’s confession, leading to wrongful convictions before the system painfully corrected course years later.

Just another example to not speak to the cops without a lawyer. They were clearly leading him down the path they wanted to fit their case
Omg, I'm sorry. This detective/interrogator is the most annoying ever! I wouldn't tell him shit.
I think that it is possible that Chuck and Ryan walked up and found Kent and ran away when the coworker came saw them. That is why he had nightmares.
I dont like that interrogation video AT ALL the kid is just trying to tell him what he thinks happened AFTER READING AN ARTICLE THAT HAD ALL THAT INFORMATION IN IT.....THAT COP IS PRETTY MUCH ACCUSING HIM INSTEAD OF LISTENING TO WHAT HE'S TRYING TO TELL HIM. He DESERVES TO GET THE MONEY FOR BEING FALSELY IMPRISONED PERIOD.
I have a theory that the two boys were in fact at the scene, but not involved in any way. I think they were bystanders in Kent’s murder and that’s why Chuck was having nightmares and became fixated on himself being the murderer because while he was “tripping on hard drugs” he watched someone kill another person and i think his mind couldn’t process that trauma accurately.
24:17 This cop makes me so angry. The kid is trying to give him info and the cop doesn't want to listen!
That cop is putting words in his mouth
I spent countless hours writing congressman, calling congressman, emailing everyone and anyone who would listen, advocating for Ryan Ferguson! I’ll never forget the day I heard the news that he was going to be released. My husband had just returned from a deployment to Afghanistan and we were in a hotel on the beach in Clearwater Florida on vacation and celebrating his safe return. I received an email and voicemail saying that we had done it!! Ryan was going to be free!! Ryan’s father is INCREDIBLE!! Thank God for his release!!
Why do people ever talk to cops without a lawyer?
Detectives & prosecutors should be held accountable for false convictions that result from coerced confessions & negligent investigations
