This happened in my hometown, and it still hits really hard. I was in the same grade, same classes, same friend groups as everyone involved, so it never felt like some distant story — it was our reality. Belleview was tiny back then, and when you grow up in a place that small, everyone’s lives overlap. We didn’t have much out there, and the rock quarry was just where we all hung out as kids. What makes it even harder is knowing the kind of person Amber was. She had always been a bully — that was just who she was growing up. But even with that in mind, the whole situation was heartbreaking. It changed the community in a way you could feel for years. Something like that doesn’t just fade; it leaves a mark on you, on the people involved, and on the town itself. It’s one of those things that stays with you, whether you want it to or not. Also, Amber and Kyle were given 25 years to life with the possibility of parole at their most recent hearings. If I’m remembering correctly, all of this happened around the same time Charlie got out of prison or before. But I seek pleasure in knowing that Amber is serving at Lowell prison- if ykyk.
Michael tells the judge he doesn't want to die. He probably never thinks about how Seth didn't want to die either.
I wish you could have included the part of the interview when they allowed them to sit in the room together and they didn't know they were being recorded. The woman came back and let them know they were being recorded and heard everything they were saying.
The combination of 15 years old and “relationship” or “seeing them in bed together” is unsettling. I think it’s important to teach children not to take adolescence too seriously at a time when emotions are hormonal driven. A focus on studies will get you further than drama. God I hated high school and so glad my kids avoided all “relationship” crap at that age. This generally happens when parents lack setting examples or boundaries or emotional support during this time in life when the brain is maturing.
It always astonishes me how someone doesn't want the death penalty, right after they sentence someone else to death without so much as a hearing. I bet that 15 year old boy didn't want to die either!!
I have NO complaints about the way this was presented. But to me, the real catalyst to this insanity was Amber and her drama. I think she should have gotten the heaviest sentence.

What a bunch of losers. So much drama and hate over a girl who clearly wasn't worth it. Seath didn't deserve that at all.
I have thought about Seath and his family frequently since this happened. We were about the same age at the time, and it really stuck with me. I just couldn’t ever imagine that anything like this would happen to anyone my age! And now that I’m about twice as old, it has only gotten more heartbreaking. It was an absolutely evil thing to happen to a child.
I always think about how stupid I was at 18. Then I see things like this and realize I was a goddamn genius. So sad.
