The Mechanics and Legacy of the Armenian Genocide

Uncover the calculated systemic steps the Ottoman Empire took to exterminate its Armenian population under the chaos of World War I. Learn how survivors fought for justice when legal systems failed, ensuring the atrocity was named and remembered.

Short Summary

  • Detail the systematic dehumanization leading up to mass violence against Armenians under Sultan Abdul Hamid II, starting in the late 1800s.
  • Analyze how World War I provided the cover for the organized deportation marches, labor battalions, and massacres conducted by the Turkish nationalist Triumvirate (Pashas).
  • Examine post-war justice efforts, including Operation Nemesis, which sought to hold perpetrators accountable when official legal channels failed.
  • This episode provides a crucial, detailed breakdown of the events that necessitated the formal coining of the term "genocide."

This episode breaks down the painful stages of the Armenian Genocide, from discriminatory laws in the 1800s to the organized final solution carried out during wartime. Understanding the specific tactics used helps illuminate how mass violence is executed and why historical memory remains vital today.

Today’s episode is personal. It’s painful. And it’s important. We’re talking about the Armenian Genocide... a dark chapter of history that millions experienced, yet many still deny or have never been taught. I’ve always known I wanted to cover this story because of my family history. But every time I tried, it never felt like the right moment. The truth is… there is no “right moment.” The right thing is to remember, to learn, and to honor those who lived through it... and those who didn’t. In today's episode, we'll look at how the Armenian community in the Ottoman Empire was targeted, how the genocide was carried out under the chaos of World War I, the stories of survival and resistance, and why recognition of these events is still debated today. History isn’t always pretty. But understanding it helps us recognize injustice when we see it... and stop it before it happens again. And before I go... This is super important to talk about. History repeats itself if we are uninformed and in the dark.

Those who don't learn history are doomed to repeat it. Those who don't TEACH history INTEND to repeat it.

One of my father’s uncles was beheaded in the course of the Armenian Genocide. My father emigrated with his family as a 1Y3M old refugee immigrant. Asylum saves lives.

I also wish you included the fact that turkey continues to fund Azerbaijan to fight Armenia for the little land we have left. Just a couple days ago, the president of Azerbaijan claimed that a historical landmark of Armenia belongs to Azerbaijan, even though Armenias history goes DECADES beyond Azerbaijans. They constantly break peace treaties and it seams that this is just a never ending cycle. People shine so much light on certain situations and not others. No one outside of the Armenian community speaks about these events.
