The Movie That Made EVERYONE Think They Were POSSESSED
The Cultural Earthquake of The Exorcist: Possession, Panic, and Aftermath
Discover how the true story of one troubled boy inspired The Exorcist, leading to unprecedented societal panic and the creation of a new psychological diagnosis.
Short Summary
- The Hunkler case provided the initial inspiration for the hugely successful horror novel and film, The Exorcist.
- The film’s 1973 release caused mass hysteria, resulting in widespread reports of physical illness, trauma, and a surge in actual exorcism requests.
- The cultural shockwave was so profound it led psychiatrists to define a new condition: cinematic neurosis. This narrative traces the journey from a localized 1949 incident to a worldwide horror phenomenon that redefined entertainment and public perception of demonic possession.

At ten years old, that movie burrowed deep into my psyche, establishing a fear so intense I immediately swore off ever watching it again. And I never will.
Yes. People went insane. I remember my Father telling me about people who literally went insane after "The Excorist" came out. Gave me frigging nightmares for months.
I own the same copy of the cookbook that was in Rosemary's baby.
So happy to see a new video! The Exorcist still freaks me out. That backwards crab walk down the stairs…jfc no. 👀💀😂😂😂😂
Christmas is the reason why they do not release the scary movies at Halloween because it wouldn't run that long before Christmas comes along and they don't wanna step on Christmas toes.
I saw this movie when i was thirteen in theater. Truly a experience in spine chilling terror. I have seen it several times on TV, and the effect isn't even close.
Saving Private Ryan & The Great Gatsby for me. Both had truly sad endings.
You're a GREAT story teller, we can listen to your stories over and over, your style is so unique. Love from Guyana 🇬🇾
Roger rabbit when he dips the trainer.....I've never been the same
I have Regan tattooed on ny leg in apart of my horror leg sleeve. Such a great story and the craziness that happened during the filming too that really got me
