Description

This is a clip from the Before Skool Podcast with Tj Power. Full episode - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzaUxQFpWYQ&t=1982s Dopamine is a chemical messenger that acts as a neuromodulator in the brain, influencing movement, motivation, pleasure, and reward. It is released from nerve cells and plays a role in making you feel good after doing something enjoyable, which motivates you to repeat the behavior. Oxytocin is a hormone and neurotransmitter that plays a key role in reproduction, social bonding, and childbirth. Produced in the hypothalamus, it is released by the pituitary gland and is involved in social behaviors like trust and attachment, and is critical for child birth and maternal bonding. In this clip, neuroscientist, Tj Power, explains how dopamine is destroying our oxytocin. High dopamine inducing activities, like social media, junk food, video games, etc are overriding our deep need for oxytocin, which bonds us to loved ones. The more we indulge, the less connected we are, which is why high dopamine activities leave us feeling unsatisfied.

Years ago, I read on a few different sites that pitocin is a form of oxytocin, and started being mass delivered to women in labor It was stated that the oxytocin receptors in the babies were overwhelmed and 'blown out'. Then, coincidentally, oxycontin was mass prescribed to these same populations The people treated for oxycontin (and then often heroin) who were the most difficult to impossible were those were pitocin babies. Siblings from the same family showed those exposed to pitocin had much, much higher rate of addiction to oxycontin/heroin. Of course, these have all been memory-holed It definitely made me think a bit.

I just realised I also didn't have a smartphone until my mid-twenties! Then I got an iPhone and it was all downhill from there 😅

If I understand correctly then Oxytocin equals joy (lasting) and Dopamine equals pleasure (fading).

Very interesting. I feel like games prioritize dopamine more, wonder if it's possible for games to be designed without that focus.
