Description

Medieval Mindset is a popular YouTube channel run by John Van Duyn, dedicated to rediscovering and reimagining the medieval world. Medieval Mindset challenges the common "Dark Ages" stereotype by exploring the rich anthropology, sociology, theology, and everyday life of medieval Europe. John's content blends deep historical research with thoughtful analysis, showing how the medieval mindset—rooted in faith, community, honor, resilience, and purpose—offers timeless wisdom for navigating modern challenges. From vibrant medieval towns and guild life to lessons on virtue, hierarchy, and meaning in a chaotic world, the channel invites viewers to see the past not as distant history, but as a living source of inspiration for today. Follow Medieval Mindset on Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@MDVL_mindset In the history of Europe, the Middle Ages or medieval period lasted approximately from the 5th to late 15th centuries, comparable with the post-classical period of global history. The medieval period is the middle epoch of the three traditional divisions of Western history: classical antiquity, the medieval period, and the modern period. The medieval period is itself subdivided into the Early, High, and Late Middle Ages. The Middle Ages began with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and transitioned into the Modern age during the Renaissance, the Reformation, the European wars of religion, and the Age of Discovery. Early Modernity is a single term adopted to describe this end-stage of the period, during which medieval Europe shades into the modern period. 0:00 - Intro 1:56 - The Next Human Renaissance is Coming 6:24 - Lost Technology Debate 11:00 - What is Medieval Mindset? 15:00 - How did the Middle Ages Begin? 20:00 - Fall of Rome 27:47 - Who Writes History? Wonderful guest. I wonder if he’s heard he’s heard of Anatoly Fomenko’s work on the fabrication of historical timelines. The bit in this interview where he said many descriptions of historical people seemed “fake” kind of reaffirmed there might be something to this period of 300 years being fabricated with the aim of giving credence to king Otto’s family lineage etc.

My concern with AI is that it is impersonal and uncaring. That will push us even further apart and isolated when we need a sense of community and connection to be healthy. Having daily contact with that technology will only further dehumanize us.

To call the Roman Empire or even republic a civilisation is pushing it a bit, I think. There certainly were civilized individuals in Roman society but it was never a civilisation like Greece or Egypt. On the contrary, it has been the destroyer of civilisations.
