Without empathy we are no longer humans
“Evil is the absence of empathy.” —Captain Gustave Gilbert during the Nuremberg trials
I just finished "the parasitic mind" 20 minutes ago and here be an encore😂
Many Lebanese Christians fear that their historical presence in the south is being permanently threatened by the violence, prompting Lebanon's government to appeal to the Holy See for protection and mediation. Ben?
Zero empathy is bad as well
In terms of how to deal with it — I don't think the solution is to try and convince people to moderate their empathy. That is attempting to use logic to counter emotion (which is generally a losing battle). Instead, I think one needs to counter their ability to spread their overly extreme form of empathy. That is, in the educational system, the legal system, the media, etc. And that has two aspects. One, limit their reach. Two, strengthening the reach of those who have a more sane and balanced relationship between heart and mind. There is, though, a third aspect. Since they are hyper-empathetic. They may see things that we do not. So we can at the same time that we work on countering their over-reach, simultaneously work to incorporate in our own world views those points that they have. For example. No, you may NOT murder someone because of the problems in the insurance industry. But, yes there may be issues to address that we have not been sensitive enough to. In short, a three prong response.
When Aristotle was talking about everything in moderation, he was talking about how much of something one has/is/does, not who or what that is aimed at. Empathy does not equate to tolerance, so one can empathize with other dangerous individuals without tolerating all of their actions. Empathy also does not mean one will join a bad group, but it does mean that one will understand that the people in those groups are not necessarily evil and may be struggling with peer pressure. So far, it sounds like you're talking about sympathy, not empathy. You mention consequentialsm as dangerous. Elaborate on that.
It’s always about balance. Just as excess empathy can be destructive, a complete lack of empathy is equally fatal to a society. True wisdom lies in the golden mean.

I would love to hear these to include the third larger ethical foundation of Aristotle’s virtue ethics.
