They should have had a handle on this in the late 1980s. Both political parties are guilty of this . Iraq and Afghanistan was a boondoggle.

How many countries were involved in fighting in Afghanistan ? How many lives lost on this wasted war that really was pointless. It only caused heartbreak and thoes brave soldiers returned home many severely injured and treated appaulingly absolutely shameful yet politicians get whopping pay rises in their next pay packet while Soldiers have to plead and beg. How is that justified.

Yeah I definitely don’t agree with Ben on this one. He doesn’t even mention defense spending. You want to talk about fraud and waste, go audit the pentagon. When I was trying to get into the Navy as nuclear propulsion engineer, I got to take a tour of one of our naval bases. When we were getting on the Uss Carney the Lieutenant, pointed out a new cruiser if I remember correctly. He said that it was one of 2 ships the military contracted out to Northrop Grumman, and some other company. The government couldn’t decide which one they wanted so they had both built and which ever one was better they would award the contract. These ships cost many millions of dollars each. It’s grease palming. You’re going to have a one off ship that you really don’t need because you have a fleet of the other, and parts will come at a premium because there is only one of them. It’s ridiculous.

We are spending 2 trillion more per year than we have. Cutting will only get us so far. Balancing the budget has to be done consistently for decades.

People pay into social security. Is Elon musk going to refund the money paid into the retirement fund?

Economic rationale differs from national security rationale when it comes to decoupling your supply chains from political adversaries and protecting your domestic industrial base. Therein lies the dilemma.

The national debt is never going to be fully repaid at all. We just keep adding to it with eachb passing year and each new investment into something.
