Description

Eric and Eliot welcome Stephen Kotkin, professor emeritus of history at Princeton University and senior fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution and Freeman-Spogli Institute. They discuss his recent Foreign Affairs article, “The Weakness of the Strongmen: What Really Threatens Authoritarians?” Kotkin explores the frailty and resilience of authoritarian regimes through the lens of recent events in Venezuela and Iran, as well as the rise of Russia and China as authoritarian powers. They also discuss potential alternative future paths for Russia and turn to the current authoritarian temptation in the United States, along with the historic reasons for optimism that American democracy is robust enough to weather the depredations of the Trump administration. Two founding leaders of the Board of Peace couldn’t go to the opening signature ceremony because they would have been arrested at the airport and sent to The Hague.

Hard-working and humble Kotkin is not as available as we all would like in the face of current world events. So this is a treat, and with gratitude for the posting we pass it on to others for the knowledge, and more importantly the wisdom, contained herein.

I wonder whether his comments on authoritarian regimes - that the successor regime will be built from the shards left after they fail -is something we should consider as what might happen after Trump.

Kotkin has an awesome bookshelf, the sign of a humanist! Edit: So does the interviewer. 😊

You know you are dealing with a serious character when he has to use wheeled ladders to get around his bookshelves.

Today I learned that I should now be so quick in trying to predict the future by painting someone as being the same as some past despot. Instead I should ask how whe got into this mess, what are we at risk to lose and what mechanisms are at hand to avoid that.
