History Will Judge Us (w/ Jacob Soboroff & Sarah McBride) | Bulwark Podcast
Authoritarian Backlash Versus Ground Truth: Immigration Raids and Democratic Coalition Building
Journalist Jacob Soberoff details the human cost of widespread ICE operations in Chicago, revealing tactics designed to provoke conflict, while Senator Sarah McBride explains why Democrats must build a “big tent coalition” to counter Trump’s consolidation of power.
Short Summary
- Federal agents employ indiscriminate sweeps in Chicago neighborhoods, often targeting non-criminals and documenting actions like Michael Bay films, causing local outrage.
- The judge blocking federal troop deployment in Illinois highlights the pretextual nature of these operations, which conservatives suggest aim to invoke the Insurrection Act.
- Senator Sarah McBride argues that confronting Trump’s authoritarian actions requires Democrats to prioritize coalition building and deliver tangible results on issues like healthcare, bypassing purity tests.
- The discussion draws parallels between current immigration crackdowns and historic American tragedies, noting that ICE is now even detaining U.S. citizens.
This episode fuses on-the-ground reporting from Chicago with high-level political strategy discussions. Listeners gain insight into the tactical use of federal law enforcement to intimidate the public and understand the necessary strategic shift—embracing ideological diversity—required to oppose systemic threats to democracy.

Trump was found guilty by a jury, not AG James...btw
Thanks for having Jacob Soboroff on to update us on some of the horrific stories he has covered. It’s important to keep them in the news to inspire us to carry on with the resistance.
If you can fit it into your schedule, it might be interesting to take up Jacob on his offer of a ride-along. You will reach audiences that he may not reach, and showing peoples' stories first hand would be powerful.
I’m Australian and I’m still absolutely shocked that his family separation the first time around wasn’t enough to rule him out as someone so heinous that no one would ever vote for him. There are kids that have never seen their parents again.
Thank you Bulwark, Jacob Soboroff, Sarah McBride for compassionate reporting of Trump/MAGA/Project 2025 atrocities.
Love to Nicolle Wallace for spotlighting people like Jacob .. msnbc deserves criticism for the likes of Joe Scarborough.. but Nicolle’s show is solidly calling out Trump’s regime with amazing guests/ reporters.. watch her everyday..
I so appreciated you sharing your personal grief Tim. I'm so sorry for the loss of your family member. One thing about Grandmothers, their memories only grow sweeter over time. Thinking of you and your family Tim. Sorry for your loss.
I saw this reporting. It’s devastating what’s happening to our country! Thank you Jacob for great reporting!
Wow what a show. Your grandmother in law sounds like the best of the educators we have been lucky to have in this country. I’m so very sorry for your family’s loss. Soboroff makes me cry every time I see him. His heart must be huge. I light candles for his safety every time I see him in dangerous settings. I have a trans family member. At my age, you’d think that would be hard for me to deal with but it’s not. People are just people. Who you love and who you feel yourself to be has nothing to do with anyone else’s business. I spend so much of my time these days crying, fighting tears, and ready to scream. Thank you guys for being here for doing what you do. I’ll keep watching even if I can’t afford to be a supported other than thru my subscription and my “likes!”
Not just history. The rest of the world is watching right now.
