Description

Cameron Hanes is a bowhunter, ultramarathon runner, podcaster, and an author. How should we deal with suffering? Most people do everything they can to avoid it, but a rare few seek it out. What if pain isn't just something to survive, but something that deepens our gratitude for the moments that truly matter? Expect to learn what drives Cam to do what he does and what being “undeniable” means to him, what the biggest lesson most people learn when they first go hunting is, the hardest thing Cam has ever done physically, if hard work beats genetics and pedigree, how Cam raised his sons and and what he would do differently, how the average person can train themselves to deal better with suffering, how Cam would feel if he felt truly worthy of his achievements, and much more… - 00:00 Chris & Cam’s Last Meeting 05:05 What Drives Cam’s Relentlessness? 18:13 Cam’s Reflections on Fatherhood 35:46 Why the Internet Hates Successful Men 44:52 The Record For Running a Marathon in Crocs 47:08 Seeing the Success of Cam’s Kids 51:12 Is Love or Hate a Better Motivator? 55:44 The Trap of Meaning Without Pleasure 1:12:39 Cam’s Most Difficult Physical Tests 1:21:00 Connections Between Genetics, Talent & Hard Work 1:32:17 The Downsides of Romanticising Suffering 1:43:33 How Cam Navigates Success & Stays Humble 1:52:59 Where to Find Cam - Get 5 Free Travel Packs, Free Liquid Vitamin D, and more from AG1 at https://ag1.info/modernwisdom Get 35% off your first subscription on the best supplements from Momentous at https://livemomentous.com/modernwisdom Get a Free Sample Pack of LMNT’s most popular Flavours with your first purchase at https://drinklmnt.com/modernwisdom - Get the best bloodwork analysis in America at https://functionhealth.com/modernwisdom Get access to every episode 10 hours before YouTube by subscribing for free on Spotify - https://spoti.fi/2LSimPn or Apple Podcasts - https://apple.co/2MNqIgw Get my free Reading List of 100 life-changing books here - https://chriswillx.com/books/ Try my productivity energy drink Neutonic here - https://neutonic.com/modernwisdom - Get in touch in the comments below or head to... I think “chosen suffering” is a payment to God in someway. You have an obligation to improve. Take advantage of what God has blessed you with.

This is beautiful. I run ultras. Not ever to these guys standards. But it helps me realise and understand that I can overcome my demons and be the best daddy to my boys. My son ran the last mile with me on my 35 miler last week and it made me feel human. And he’ll remember that forever. Thanks guys for your podcasts and your brain food! It helps a lot of people trust me! Love to everyone who reads this stay hard!!!

I’m a huge fan of Chris and the pod. But it’s crazy to hear him lecture guests about parenting and marriage lol

At 52 I recently got into running again. We have 13 acres of land. Instead of being lazy and buying a tractor,I bought a DR walk behind brush mower. Walking while cutting builds my ligaments and tendons. Thanks for the encouragement.

I’ve listened to this episode 3 times now. So many good points, it has really helped me at this stage of my journey, I tore my shoulder labrum while I was still in a boot 6 months post op ankle surgery from torn ligaments and constant ankle swelling. I was a Marine Drill Instructor and after ankle surgery they ended my SDA tour, I felt so defeated. I was also 33 years old and was still trying to out do guys at 25. Didn’t even seem like a challenge but my body just didn’t recover like theirs, or whatever justification my mind created but after a torn labrum and rehabbing my ankle I went into a dark place. Chris was right. What do guys do when your only outlet is not longer available? What does one do when your stress relief will cause more problems than it will solve? How do you keep doing bands and yoga to get yourself back to performing? It doesn’t create that inner peace that comes from slaying demons in your mind. Then all that’s left is the demons and the couch. The phone. The wondering if this is it? How can people live like this? I went to that dark place to discover my identity was tied up in something that may have been built by hard work but was still only temporary. When I began to accept my circumstances and be grateful for the health I had left that’s when I began to heal. Like a hero’s journey, in order to be deserving of strength I had to know what life was like without it, so that I would never take it for granted .

A 4mph walk is pretty crazy. That's just about my average jogging pace I think
