People smiling at work, a distant relic
I thought her name sounded familiar so I looked Megan up. Wow, she's really gone a long way from a hardware engineer to at one point heading IT for the entire federal government. Very cool!
Then: _It is your communicator, your friend, your ally..._ Now: *_It is your god!_*
The device in the thumbnail (Magic Link) was my very first PDA. It was $300. I was making minimum wage and saved up for it. I drove to a Best Buy in another city to buy it. It took like 8 AAA batteries or something like that and had about 3 hours of battery life. It was the most worthless gadget I've ever purchased in my entire life. I loved that thing and took it with me everywhere. 😄
I imagine the gameboy inspired to some extent the first smartphone.
They were definitely on the right track.
A FUN FACT: Jobs was pushing for those kind of devices R&D at Apple before being ousted in 1985 because he wanted to make an “iPad”, but the technology was not fully there yet even by the middle of the 2000s, so he has decided to do a smaller device first. Turns out that the side quest was a more important product than the tablet.
This is really cool David. General Magic was spun off from Apple in 1990 and nearly delivered the technology we use every day twenty years early. Dream makers.
For anyone interested. Alan Watts predicted the internet and video chatting in vivid detail back in the 50’s.
There’s great documentary about General Magic from a few years back. This is a nice companion piece!
