Description

The woman was crying because her son was killed on a Newark, New Jersey street corner that had no stoplight. This video presents sections of a historically relevant 1965 documentary funded by the National Council of Churches in an effort to help those in America’s inner cities find ways to express themselves to their local NJ government leaders with the hope of improving their conditions. The filmmakers were following what happened when a group from Students for a Democratic Society, SDS, a political action group, went to Newark to organize people so they could improve their living and working conditions. As you watch this, remember that just two years later, Newark exploded in riots that killed 26 people, injured hundreds and destroyed hundreds of buildings. Here’s what happened when they got together to get a stoplight at an intersection. The situation in Newark at the time was explained in two words: racial polarization. Whites held the power in Newark along with a token representation of blacks who locals called “house Negroes.” Newark at the time was 52% black. People were angry at the inaction of their local government leaders. The filmmakers followed the organizers as they went into the streets to speak with residents. Among the conditions that bothered many was housing. Residents paid rent and requested repairs. The filmmakers followed residents as they attempted to push for improvements. When that didn’t work, organizers encouraged residents to form a new political party, a third party that would beat the Democrats in an upcoming election. Those who remember 1967 as the "Summer of Love" may have forgotten what happened that year in Newark. Over four days of rioting, looting & and property destruction, 26 people died & hundreds were injured with neighborhoods left in ruins. The riots left economically significant negative effects on blacks income and employment. And the riots significantly depressed the value of black-owned property for the decades after. In 2020 though often-cited among America's more dangerous cities, statistics show Newark, with the city's population on the rise, having its lowest crime rate in 50 years.

Unbelievable - all that resistance to simply putting in a traffic light to save lives.

A request for a street light was met with nothing but contempt. Brought out the cameras and the response became convoluted. It became a bureaucracy.

I remember In 74 when the parents and teachers sat in the street to get a traffic light in front of Speedway Avenue School cause kids had to cross the entrance to NJ Parkway.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Thank you for sharing this incredibly vivid, resonant and emotional piece of our shared history. We are not yet the 'greatest nation in the world' but we might get there if we try, harder. I feel like all my fellow citizens forgot integrity is what you do when nobody is watching. DO the right thing, always, by everyone and expect the same.

Thank you for this documentary. And I prefer it in black and white.

And in 2026, 'thing's haven't changed that much when it comes to collaborating with those in a position to instigate improvements for the benefit of EVERYone involved. 😳 No__rather, those with the money and power have learned new ways to keep the average person from reaching their life goals. It seems as if they say, "All for me and none for you!"__while they continue trying to convince the rest that [we] will "...own nothing and be happy!" 😳😬😞 The biggest 'CROCK' of all! Thanks for this episode, David! 💖🙌😺

I love most of the 60s & 50s cars, music & some styles. The Civil Rights Movement & Motown was on. But sadly Vietnam was getting hot. & Now, 60+ years later, even with many improvements, there's still many conditions that are pretty much the same.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 (KJV) Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
