German Officer's Account of Resistance Development Against Hitler

Understand the complex evolution of the German military resistance leading up to the July 20th plot, and the political factors that initially strengthened Hitler's support.

Short Summary

  • Resistance against Hitler was a slow, segmented development, long stalled by early national successes.
  • The only feasible force for a coup was the German Army, as civilian opposition was too vulnerable.
  • The speaker provided critical front-line intelligence to key resistance leaders by leveraging his High Command access.
  • Survival after the failed plot depended on strategic lying, high-level advocacy, and not being deemed a principal player.
  • Initial post-1933 support stemmed from economic recovery and reversal of Treaty of Versailles terms, separate from ideological alignment.

This summary reveals Admiral Graf von Kielmansegg's perspective on the challenges facing the internal opposition movement against Hitler, detailing the secrecy required and why overt action was stalled until wartime circumstances changed. This analysis contrasts the initial popularity stemming from national restoration versus the eventual necessity of a military overthrow.

Description

To see the whole film go here: https://youtu.be/rcJPlRaY-JM The speaker is Johann Adolf Graf von Kielmansegg who was a German military officer who served in both World War II and in postwar West Germany. Born in 1906, he was part of a noble family and entered the German Army in the 1920s. During World War II, he served on the General Staff and was involved in operational planning. He was not part of the Nazi inner circle and was considered a professional officer rather than a political one. After the war, he was held as a prisoner but later joined the Bundeswehr, the armed forces of West Germany, where he rose to the rank of general. He played a key role in integrating West Germany into NATO and promoting civilian control over the military. He died in 2006.

This man saw the German Monarchy under Wilhelm II, Weimar Republic, Nazi Germany, East and West Germany and saw the unification and saw Merkel first woman chancellor (2005-2021) in his lifetime. That’s crazy he saw it all in his own country
