Bro started the convo asking why is your old ass watching my content lmao
This woman is awesome. As a public school worker in a red state I felt like she touched on all the points that matter to me. She is making the right moves by reaching out to Destiny to access his younger, broader audience. Thanks for having her on!
Fun Fact, Virginia is long overdue for campaign finance law reform, which I will work on once I win this November. However, current law allows anyone, anywhere to donate (any amount) to my campaign, as long as they are a U.S. citizen. If you want to support me, the ActBlue link is in the description. Thanks all!
It is so disappointing I could show this woman talking to my mom, dad, sister whoever is conservative and they would say “Wow, she’s very well spoken and knowledgeable. She would make a great representative.” And then hear democrat and immediately reject her….
She is very intelligent and well spoken. Knowing there are people like her grasping power at the local level is the hope I needed.

teacher here...this woman DEFINITELY understands the major issues that affect our schools. For the testing stuff she mentions, I wanted to add that in Florida, one of the most recent changes to the standardized testing is the F.A.S.T. This test used to be once a year at the end of the school year to assess where all of the students were at. It's now 3 tests. They take a benchmark at the start, a mid progress test, and then the final one. So for example, in 10th grade, just in one ELA class out of say 7 courses that year, that test is a grad requirement and if they don't pass (statistically the FL reporting shows state average on that specific test is a 50% to get a 3 or higher to pass) they just test constantly the clt, act, sat over and over until they meet the requirement. The teachers' VAM score is calculated by their observations from admin (based on Marzano's research and largely is irrelevant bullshit and just becomes a checkbox if the admin likes you or not) and of course, the students' test scores. So if a teacher is given honors courses over another colleague for instance, that teacher has a higher chance of meeting the threshold score to get their teeny weeny performance based "bonus" added to their salary idk it's like a 100 bucks or something like that. If you don't get that money that year, its gone, poof, you can never get that ever again and IT STACKS each year. Everyone wants to meme about haha schools are bad in America but NO ONE except the people who work in education, have any clue as to what is really going on. I promise you, it's WAY worse than most would ever imagine. My job isn't like a regular job. It's....insanity. O and also, I listened to that one podcast with Dan being shocked at the seniors' reading levels and I can tell you depending on what classes you go in, it's worse. I was given a few ELL classes this year (I only speak English btw) and half of the 32 kids in that class can't speak English at all or read at all. Yesterday I bought a book from 5 Below that was a practice writing letters book for kindergarteners for one of my new kids because in Guatemala, you don't HAVE to go to school so the student I got didn't ever learn how to read or write in their own language even. Wanna know something funny about that? Remember the F.A.S.T.? They have to take that in English with only a tiny paper english to spanish dictionary and they have the same graduation requirements as everyone else. That test is basically 4-5 cold reads of things like greek literature, american seminal documents or court cases, poems, selections from literature from all of history, and argumentative essays. One strategy for those students that fail is to keep taking the CLT over and over again because to meet the score they need for that one, it is technically achievable by just bubbling C straight down if you take the test enough times so they don't have to actually read it, just sit for the test enough. Everyone wants to pretend they care about education but there's two sides to it: one is what everyone else sees on the news or what the suits are saying from their crystal palace downtown; the other is what teachers and students and some admin see, which is where the real stuff happens. I already typed way more than I intended so I need to stop but yeah, that stuff in the trenches we deal with that no one sees? That is such a uniquely special, insane, emotional, battlefield where you fight to show them that you actually give a shit about them and when they finally realize you do, they're graduating. I love my job and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I have 12k credit card debt, a 60k home equity loan, 30k student loan from me and my spouse, and I can't seem to figure out why my car won't start but you know what they say, it's for the kids :3 i just want to scream sometimes but i guess this post will work for now. you probably won't even see this but in the off chance you do and you actually read it, I've followed your content for a long time and the work you do is important too. Thanks for keeping me informed and entertained and stuff
Great talk. I’m a Virginia resident and a lot of what Jessica said I see in my day to day life, especially with youngkin and the discourse around public education. Please bring on more state and local politicians because I feel like they are much more in tune with the average voter
Jessica was an incredible guest. Please have them on again. It was such a great convo!
