Ok, in this case the nuclear power slander is frustrating. No reactors are venting waste, the “smoke” you see is just water vapor.

For the record, Three mile island was a PR disaster, more than it was any kind of nuclear disaster. There was a bubble of gas in the reactor, but the on-site crew managed to successfully vent it. However, word of the bubble reached the media before it was dealt with, and they called the station while they were dealing with the crisis and sensationalized the answers they got about the situation. The panic in the community caused schools to cancel, civilians to evacuate, and national eyes on the power plant. Not a single person who had the opportunity to step up and explain what was happening (which was an event, but nothing they weren't ready to handle) did, and those who tried only made the PR situation worse. If I remember correctly at one point one of the engineers answered a press question with "We don't owe you answers." I recommend Kyle Hill's video on the subject for more details that are likely more accurate than what I could ever be.

58:39 Nuclear waste is actually stored in massive concrete casts that make it basically cut off from the outside world. You could kiss one of the containers without issue. Nuclear waste is, by comparison to fossil fuel waste, an insignificant amount. It’s measured in cubic feet in the double digits and you can store decades of waste in an area the size of a football field and that’s without burying or stacking them. Edit: I am not an expert on nuclear power plants or anything but if you’re looking for more information, I recommend Kyle Hill. He is a science communicator with a specialty in nuclear power.

Fun fact! Nuclear waste is not like the toxic slug we see in cartoons. They’re pellets placed in a container, placed in another container, exc. so imagine like dippin dots or marbles all in a cylinder matryoshka. There is ongoing research of using a portion of the waste to be recycled into nuclear energy again. Idk how efficient it is, but the diesel-ification of a green energy source is RAD
