Russia's Century-Long Sabotage of China's Rise

Discover how Russian imperialism, driven by foundational continental empire rules, systematically derailed China's development for over a century, creating patterns relevant even today.

Short Summary

  • Russia historically applied specific rules for continental empires—avoiding two-front wars and eliminating great power neighbors—to destabilize China sequentially.
  • Stalin orchestrated complex maneuvers, including using the Sino-Japanese conflict to drain Chinese resources and ensuring communist success via military aid tied to specific political concessions.
  • The Sino-Soviet split occurred because fundamental empire-building instincts (who gets to be the regional hegemon) superseded shared communist ideology.
  • Learn key historical takeaways, like why Gorbachev's reforms led to rapid collapse and how Mao learned crucial lessons about the limits of Soviet promises.

This lecture by military historian Sarah Paine analyzes the relationship between Russia and China, focusing on the mid-19th century through the Cold War. Paine argues that Russia actively scripted Chinese actions to its own benefit, setting the stage for prolonged internal turmoil which ultimately delayed China’s rise significantly. Understanding these historical precedents is crucial for evaluating current geopolitical dynamics between the two nations.

Description

In this lecture, military historian Sarah Paine explains how Russia—and specifically Stalin—completely derailed China’s rise, slowing them down for over a century. This lecture was particularly interesting to me because, in my opinion, the Chinese Civil War is 1 of the top 3 most important events of the 20th century. And to understand why it transpired as it did, you need to understand Stalin’s role in the whole thing. Born too early to explore the stars, too late to explore the world, but just in time to appreciate the work of Dr. Sarah Paine. Thank you for making this available

As a Pole, I am immensely grateful that Sarah Paine, in all her brilliance, has found a way into the hearts and minds of so many English speakers around the world. The way she presents history is exactly the same version that we are taught in our schools. The word *version* is no coincidence. Just 100 kilometers east of me, history is taught in a completely different, distorted, and twisted way.
