Description

Stephen Kotkin is arguably the world’s foremost expert on Joseph Stalin and has written a massive 2-volume biography about him (with a 3rd volume in the works). No other individual had more of a profound impact on the 20th century than Stalin. He held the power of life and death over every single person across 11 time zones, and he killed tens of millions of people, utterly consumed by an ideology aimed at building paradise on Earth. And he was one half of the biggest and most consequential military confrontation in history (even if Hitler didn’t prove to be his match). Dwarkesh is like the student that does the reading before the lecture, and Lex is like the student that does the reading before the final.

Professor Kotkin! I’ve watched every single interview of him on YouTube and can’t get enough. He is always so interesting, and provides a fresh take every time. It’s not just the same hour of podcast repeated as with so many other guests. What a treasure of history.

I'm a Stephen Kotkin fan and a Dwarkesh Patel subscriber. So I was happy to see this video. Dwarkesh clearly puts in the work before these interviews. Every time I have a question comes into my head during the interview, Dwarkesh asks some better version of what I was wondering. Excellent work.

Wouldnt it be super interesting to have a round table with Stephen Kotkin, Sarah Paine, and maybe one more 20th century head? Id listen to that all day.

I really really love the way Kotkin is able to disagree with a political opinion while being respectful.
