When my car started requiring new parts, I opted to fix myself rather than get another. My 99 Mirage cost $1,100 in 2015, it's currently at 237K miles, still going strong as my daily driver, and probably the smartest investment I've made. Even better, the value appreciated 28% since buying it in 2015. I'll drive 90s manual cars for the rest of my life.

I'm much happier finding good used cars and doing the needed repairs on my own. You really don't have any info on the new cars and how long they will last but it exists for ones that have been out there 5 to 10 years at least. The worst part of buying new is that the depreciation is so large. So buying used seems smart, but you have to worry if the original owners took care of them or not, so there is a risk there.
