Meta Halts Massive AI Hiring Amidst Structural Investment Critique

Understand why Meta stopped aggressively hiring AI talent and how this signals a systemic funding crisis in technology driven by investor mandates rather than sustainable revenue.

Short Summary

  • Meta halted its massive AI talent spending spree because leadership lacks a concrete plan for its existing researchers.
  • The recent hiring frenzy reveals a flawed tech industry model where scale is judged by employee headcount, not profitability.
  • Historical patterns show that societal education pushes (like coding bootcamps) serve as tools to manage public expectation during systemic instability.
  • Authorities continue to mandate learning AI despite a corresponding crisis in skilled physical labor industries.

This discussion dissects Meta's sudden stop on hiring AI talent. It connects this event to past tech over-hiring fueled by cheap money and critiques the current movement pushing workforce education based on hype (AI) rather than actual underlying societal needs like infrastructure improvement.

That $200million guy got hired to sit in a room and not invent AGI just so that a rival company could not hire him to sit in a room and not invent AGI.

A bank here in Australia recently sacked a bunch of call support staff and replaced them with AI. They are hiring them all back now as the AI was resulting in more calls to real people than before the AI was installed.

It is insane to me that it has taken so many people *YEARS* to notice that LLMs really are just fancy chatbots.

It's even worse when you consider that an Nvidia GPU in a datacenter will only live and be useful for 5 years, and after 5 years pay those trillions again to replace everything in the data center. Imagine the mountain of tech garbage...

We simply don't have the power grid capacity to support all these AI datacenters.

Git was built in a week by one guy and scales globally with elegance. Facebook needed an army of engineers to fix PHP with HHVM — a billion-dollar band-aid for a bad decision. Good design compounds. Bad design metastasizes.
