I Grew Sweet Potatoes 3 Different Ways, Here's What Happened

Final table front right potato looks like it's just as shocked as we are. That said, I don't care as much about the yield as I do about the flavor. If it is gritty and bland who wants to eat it? I'd love to know how the bigger sizes effected the flavor.

The sweet potatoes were amazing, but the sight of a grown man taking delight in an interestingly colored sow bug made my day. Folks, never lose that childhood sense of wonder!

For the isopod, the front half is likely about to molt. Isopods always shed their "pants" first. Cool find! I love raising them!

I had an Amish woman tell me that she hills up her soil, puts a black trash bag over it, and makes a hole to plant her sweet potato slip in the middle. She had very large sweet potatoes. This method helps get the heat they like in my zone 5 growing area. I plan to try this year.

As a bucket gardener your channel alone gave me hope. I would garden with my mother and my grandmother had the most amazing green thumb. One thing about growing sweet potatoes is that you can eat the nutritious green leaves. It is an Asian staple. We have grown a bed of sweet potatoes for several years. We do use Azomite for fertilizer. We also use some crab/lobster shells for nematodes. Many of the sweet potatoes are huge. They look awful, but you just need to peel them. They are so big that I slice them and cook them in the microwave. Whatever you do, don't toss them out if they look funny - just cut out the bad parts. We got three big boxes full this last summer. We just moved them into the house due to the 90+ degree weather (March 2026) instead of keeping them in the garage. You can also plant a whole, sprouted potato if you have one. We always think we have dug them all up but just to make sure we dig a little more and sure enough, there are more.
